Armour Donates Patrols for Cenotaph

Spate of war memorial thefts nationwide prompts Southend Security company to offer security patrols for Cenotaph free of charge.

The UK’s cenotaphs and war memorials are being targeted across the country for precious metals, vandalism and political views. An Essex company ArmourSecurity.com is offering its services to Southend-on-Sea Borough Council free of charge in order to help combat any increase in criminal activity. Clifford Connors, Armour’s Operations Director explains: “This is not just a local concern. War memorials nationwide are being targeted and I feel it our duty as a part of the community and as a security provider to help protect these sites. This can be rolled out across the country if local Security companies like mine chip in. This is something I would be happy to co-ordinate. With remembrance services over for another year this issue must be kept in the spotlight.”

It is reported that the War Memorials Trust is dealing with 300 cases per month. The cost to protect all UK sites could be at a minimum of £1,000,000 per day, which is clearly cost prohibitive.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s Parks Management Officer, Ian Brown said: “Whilst we are not currently facing such criminal issues at Southend Cenotaph, we are grateful to know that it can be given extra protection. This is a very public-spirited gesture.”
